How Page Experience Affects Your Search Engine Rankings

Improving rankings in the search engine results pages, or SERPs, is the primary goal of any SEO company in San Diego.  As part of being a professional in SEO in San Diego, studying the factors that affect rankings is critical to delivering strong results.  However, this is not as simple as it sounds.  While many things do affect search engine rankings, there is not an easy checklist of things that, if they are all done, guarantee a high ranking in the SERPs.  Instead, some things count more than others, and it is often difficult to know how much weight will be given to each individual factor on a webpage.

For example, Google’s Page Experience metric was always billed as a ranking “signal,” although it was clear that it could never be labeled as a system for building web pages.  In fact, Google removed the Page Experience “system” label some time ago, while still emphasizing that customer experience would continue to play a large role in search engine rankings.

Google has long maintained that its ultimate goal is a good page experience.  However, the company has been hesitant about labeling any of its metrics too rigidly, for fear that webmasters and SEO professionals would fall into the trap of treating these metrics like a checklist rather than guidelines for creating good content.  How can you create good content for your website without worrying about metrics and still receive high rankings?  Here are a few tips:

  • Tailor content to user needs.  Probably the most important rule of good content creation is to create content your users want to see.  This may seem self-evident, but many websites are filled with useless information that does nothing for visitors.  Be sure that every page, every paragraph, and every word speaks to visitors with something they need to see or hear.
  • Make content easily accessible.  Another pitfall for content creators is hiding good content by making it difficult to find.  Be sure your website is easily navigated, with plenty of clickable links pointing to your content and an easy way to find major category pages.  Additionally, be sure that your content is adapted for all devices and all users.  Adaptive technological needs should never be ignored, and translation services, when available, can really boost your engagement levels with a wider audience.
  • Update content frequently.  Be sure that you are updating your content regularly.  Nothing is worse for your search engine rankings than outdated or stale content that cannot reach your readers.  Update frequently and be sure to include links to outside, relevant sources when possible.
